OH MY GIRL, Closer

An original visual by combining the heterogeneous elements of ruins and fairies

It was important to set the story first because there was a concept of "a movie that lingers a lot." We started with the scene where one member loses her memory and wakes up, and made it into a story where the other members become guides on the journey to find memories.

What was the charm/attractiveness of the artist that you wanted to shine hrough this project?
OH MY GIRL was a talented group that could realize dreamy, clean, and fantasy images that existing female group artists did not show in the K-POP scene at the time. When I saw the video work that Oh My Girl filmed before, such as debut trailers and art films, I was convinced that there was a lot of potential in them. Through this work, I wanted to bring out the potential.

What was the attractiveness of the song that you wanted to make it shine through this project?
At that time, it was very rare to feel the lingering feeling for a long time after it was over. I thought it was an unrivaled song, and I decided to film a music video like a movie that lingers a lot.
What kind of directing principles did you set up and work on to convey the charm of the song and the artist? (Shooting angle, editing point, color, etc.)
It was important to set the story first because there was a concept of "a movie that lingers a lot." When working with group artists, it is also important to determine the division of roles of members. Since we needed a scene that focused on each member and a storyline that enveloped them all, we started with the scene where one member loses her memory and wakes up, and made it into a story where the other members become guides on the journey to find memories. To create the most mysterious atmosphere, symbolic props such as forests, plants, water, deer, and sailboats were used.

Please share the process of deriving the visual concept of this work. What was the key concept, and what visual materials did you use?
The key concept was "the space where fairies live in the ruins." It was judged that it would be possible to create an original visual by combining the heterogeneous elements of ruins and fairies. It was made so that the modern cars were rusted and covered with plants that it was impossible to tell what era the story was about, and the melody of the fairies was expressed as analog radio sounds. It is judged that the combination of these heterogeneous elements created a dreamy atmosphere well. I had a lot of conference with the art director while collecting stories, and the set was so big that the art team especially suffered a lot.

"Journey to find memories"

How did SUNNY VISUAL grow through this work?
This work was a project in which set expression was the most important. It is a work that contains the experiences of three veteran art directors, filming directors, and lighting directors, and I, a new director at the time, learned a lot by relying entirely on the three's teachings. I remember that CG and editing were also very difficult. In the case of editing, I had a hard time turning over the entire amount three times and doing it again, and in the process of opening it in detail and thinking about it, it was an opportunity to think deeply about the music video grammar.

How did you react after this work was released to the world? If you have any memorable feedback from artists, fans, and the same industry, please share it.
After the release of the “CLOSER” MV, I feel that the concept of K-Pop female group artists has changed. When I heard that "CLOSER” was the representative work of OH MY GIRL, I was mosty proud. In the future, I want to become a director who grows with the artist by making representative works that capture the artist's signature image.
